Process

The process of design is essentially a problem solving discipline. And as every problem has unique factors, so do design solutions. It is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. We at Shields Design take pride in our ability to adapt to our clients needs. We are flexible solution finders and are adept at “making it work” for various budgets, timelines, resources and personalities.

That said, there are still several milestones in every journey to a solution that we will pass through.

(1) Fact Finding

This is where we get to know you and your needs. Whether for a seemingly simple layout project or a complex branding initiative, we’ve got questions. At this stage, we’re looking for all you’ve got. There is no such thing as TMI (a.k.a. too much information). Please let us know about any limitations (budgets, deadlines, “our boss hates orange”). The more we know, the more accurately we can customize a solution.

(2) Estimating / Planning

After we’ve taken in all the facts, thoroughly digested and percolated them, we will create a proposal that outlines the scope of work as we understand it (what’s be produced, whose responsible for what, etc), the fees we will require to complete the work (fees can be quoted within a per project, hourly or retainer structure, and estimated production schedule. Please review it carefully and let us know if you have any questions. If it all looks good, we will use the proposed schedule as our actual production calendar and work to those deadlines.

Note: After a proposal has been accepted, a 1/3 fee deposit is required to commence work. Standard payment schedule includes 1/3 to begin production, 1/3 at the delivery of the first completed draft and 1/3 at project completion. Other payment schedules can be negotiated. Just ask (during the Fact Finding stage please).

(3) Concept Production!

This is the fun part. We really like to forge a collaborative relationship with our clients. We understand design, and have a general sensitive to all things marketing and communication. But you, the client, know your business. We are looking for your constant feedback. According to the agreed upon schedule, we will develop initial concepts for your review. Please look them over carefully – scrutinize if you will. Let us know your reaction to the minutest detail. If there is copy, proof it and let us know what comma may have been left out. If the crop of a photo irks you somehow, speak up. Now is the time.

(4) Revisions

Based on all your feedback, we will tweak, rework and revise the concepts to what we believe is your best and most viable solution. Depending on the scope of the project, this may take several draft rounds to get right. But we’re in this thing. We want to make sure that you have the piece(s) that you need – that will be the most effective for your business.

(5) Final Approval

When we all think we’ve got it, you will be provided with a final draft for approval along with a sign off sheet. Although we do our very best to make sure your final drafts are error free, you are the final line of defense. Please proof read all your final draft carefully. Read each line and call in an extra pair of eyeballs if you can. If you are satisfied that everything is good to, kindly sign the provided form and get it back to us. That’s our signal to get your design in to whatever form it needs to be for a smooth delivery to a production vendor or medium of choice.

(6) Group Hug

Okay, actual hugging is not required. But let us know what you thought of your experience with Shields Design. If possible, please provide us with samples of your finished pieces (they’re our babies, too). And keep in touch. We think the best work stems from long term relationships with our clients. We value those relationships and our experience with your company only makes us better solution finders when the next problem arises.

Those are the basics. Your specific design needs may require a more complex process outline or, if we know you pretty well, we maybe able to skip a step or two. Think of the team members at Shields Design as your design consultants. We will work with you to find the best solutions for building your business. And design truly does extend into all aspects of your business. It’s not all newspaper ads and brochures. Give us a call and let’s do great things. Your success is our success.
